If you happen to be a new student here at James Madison or have discovered a recent interest in running, below are three runs to green spaces.

1. The Arboretum:

The Edith J. Carrier Arboretum on the edge of campus is just over a mile (1.2) from the quad. Although the run from main campus may include the trek up several hills, once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the peaceful pond surrounded by beautiful gardens including an herb garden, a wildflower garden, a perennial garden, and many more. The trails within the Arboretum itself consist of relatively short loops. If you are considering going for a lengthier route, the Arboretum paths link to many other areas on campus.

2. Purcell Park:

Purcell Park is 1.6 miles away and includes a mile and a half long walking trail that winds through its fields of grass with an occasional patch of wooded area. This path would be the perfect route for a quick jog through nature. Purcell Park also contains a long section of the Bluestone Trail. If you decide to take a long run on the Bluestone Trail, you’ll find yourself within Purcell Park.

3. Hillandale Park

Hillandale Park. is located approximately three miles from main campus, which makes it a perfect place to run to for a longer route. The park contains a 1.3 mile walking trail that starts at the edge of its beautiful meadows then travels up through the woods. The Rocktown Trails are also a wonderful feature of this park. These trails offer “three levels of difficulty” depending on the type of running experience you are looking for, and are constructed in a “set of stacked loops”(Rocktown).
Now that you know a few great runs nearby you’re ready to go, always remember to properly prepare for your run.
